The appeal of trail running and how to enjoy it in Japan

Hello everyone, this time I'd like to introduce you to trail running, which is becoming increasingly popular around the world, and how you can enjoy it in Japan. I'll tell you in detail about what trail running is, its appeal, and the recommended places, communities, and events you can enjoy in Japan.

What is trail running?

Trail running refers to running on unpaved natural roads. You run through a variety of terrains, including dirt roads, mountain trails, sand, grass, forest trails, mud, and snow. Unlike road running, where you run on paved roads, the more technical the terrain, the slower your pace will be. You need to avoid tree roots, rocks, and other obstacles, and the ground may be slippery or uneven. There are also large changes in elevation, so you need to be aware of the elevation you are gaining (elevation gain) and the elevation you are losing (elevation loss).

With all this in mind, you need to pay attention to your surroundings and concentrate on your feet. It's more challenging than running on paved roads, and you should take necessary precautions, such as letting someone know where you're going before you set off and learning the terrain of the area you're running in. But the beautiful scenery, sense of freedom, and sense of accomplishment make trail running worth a try.

Trail running gear

If you are already a runner and want to start trail running, you don't need to buy any special gear right away. If you choose short, less technical trails, road running shoes will suffice. However, if you plan on tackling more technical trails, it's a good idea to have shoes specifically designed for trails. Road running shoes are lightweight, well-cushioned, and suitable for hard, smooth surfaces. Trail running shoes, on the other hand, are generally heavier and designed to protect your feet from different surfaces such as mud, rocks, sand, and roots. If you are going to run long distances, you should also consider a hydration pack or vest. These can be useful for storing water, food, clothing, and a first aid kit.

If you are a beginner and are unsure about buying trail running shoes, it may be a good idea to try renting them first.

How to get started with trail running in Japan

One of the differences between road running and trail running is the pace. Trail running is slower than road running, especially for beginners. Start on easy trails and gradually increase the distance. Trail running is more physically demanding, as it involves more changes in terrain and elevation. Focus on effort rather than pace.

Where to go trail running in Japan

1. Mt. Takao (Tokyo) The best place to start trail running is on a hiking trail. One of the most popular places in Tokyo is Mt. Takao (Takaosan). Mt. Takao is located in the suburbs of Tokyo and can be accessed from Shinjuku Station in about 50 minutes on the Keio Line. The good thing about Mt. Takao is that it has multiple trails with different levels of difficulty. There are a total of seven trails (Routes 1-6 and the Inariyama Trail) that can be enjoyed by beginners to advanced runners.

The views from the summit are amazing, and if the weather is good you can even see Mt. Fuji. From Mt. Takao, there are trails to the neighboring Mt. Kobotokejoyama and Mt. Kagenobuyama. On the trail to Mt. Kobotokejoyama, you can enjoy the famous nameko soup, oden, and shaved ice. At the end of the trail, you can relax and refresh in the hot springs near Takaosanguchi Station.

2. Other places around Tokyo There are other great places for trail running around Tokyo, including Ome, Okutama, and Musashi-Itsukaichi. Okutama is a popular destination for nature lovers and is home to Tokyo's highest mountain, Mt. Kumotori (2,017 meters), which is perfect for hiking and camping.

3. Trail running spots outside Tokyo With about 70% of Japan's land area being mountainous, there are plenty of options. For example, Hakone, a hot spring resort in Kanagawa Prefecture, has hiking trails such as the old Tokaido road and Mt. Kintoki, and offers beautiful scenery.
